Ivory Tower is a student-run magazine staffed by undergraduates in a year-long course offered by the English department that annually publishes the very best in undergraduate student fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art. We strive to provide an outlet for those who wish to express themselves creatively, no matter what part of the undergraduate community they come from.
We are inspired by a belief in the necessity of artistic expression and its power to enlighten, challenge, and captivate. We seek to promote and expose original work by undergraduate writers and artists across the University of Minnesota campus.
Ivory Tower is designed to provide real-world experience in producing a literary publication. The class is composed of students with the intent of creating a balanced group possessing a variety of skills important to magazine publication. We work together in order to learn the basics of literary publishing through the guidance offered by the class to draft, edit, and publish a top-quality magazine. We also organize the launch of our magazine at the end of April each year.
Ivory Tower first ran from 1952 to 1969 as a regular insert in the Minnesota Daily, and was resurrected in 2006 in its current, standalone format. Staff members of the journal are given the opportunity to learn about the editing, publishing, and design world. Alumni of the Ivory Tower staff have gone on to careers in publishing, editing, writing, and performing.
